That's assuming you're a coffee drinker, of course and you're not drinking de-caf. The sweet point for the number of coffees drunk throughout the day for health is three to four cups, (or mugs - one usually puts only a teaspoon in either). This is generally enough to keep you going throughout the day. Some of us can't get going in the morning until we've had three at least. However, it's so easy to consume more than this, just because you can. If you find you're starting to not sleep very well at night or can't drift off when your head hits the pillow, you've maybe overdone it with the caffeine. At this point your system has become a little too revved up, indicating that you're now in a stressed state. Not good! If you think you need that fifth coffee, take a moment and consider water instead for the rest of the day.

Don't fill your calendar with back-to-back meetings. If you're the one arranging the meeting, think before you book it. Is it essential that it needs to be held this week, for example, when you have no more room in your diary? Do you really need to squeeze it in between two already booked meetings? You need some breathing space, do you not? If you do need to squeeze it in, you might want to consider informing the next meeting that you might be a tad late.

Literally! Ensure you take time out that you're given. If you're allocated a specific amount of time for lunch, for example, take it. I know when you're enjoying your work so much it's easy to just carry on working, regardless. Even, better, if your lunch break is an hour long, have your lunch (preferably away from your desk) and use 30-40 minutes to get some exercise and fresh air - go for a brisk, but relaxed, walk, rain or shine (take a brolly if it's raining). 30-40 minutes is all you need. This can do two things - 1. get that blood circulating through your body again, ready for the afternoon, and 2. it will help you sleep at night. Don't get an hour? Live close enough to your office to be able to walk in? If not, consider including a walk before or after work. Alternatively, ensure you are able to put time aside at the weekend for some exercise. Either way, 5-10 minutes away from a computer screen is the least you should be doing every hour.

Take time out to have a laugh and a joke with colleagues. Sometimes even just five minutes is enough for connecting and relaxing (even better in person). Don't use these breaks to whinge. That's what your line manager's for, or the project manager. And of course, when I say whinge, do this in a constructive way. Whinging gives the brain another reason to cause you further stress. If you need to whinge and it needs to be on record, do it in an email and ask AI to construct it for you in a diplomatic way. AI could be your best buddy at work, if you haven't already figured this out.

I don't mean in the sense of being inconsiderate to others in your quest for supremacy! You only have one life and one body. Consider your body as a vessel that's carrying you through your life. Look after it and it could take you further than you thought possible. It needs the right fuel, time out, and the right love, care and attention to do this.
